NAHA, (North American Hairstylists Awards), is the hairstylist version of the Oscars. It's where bright new talent as well as experienced talent is all brought together and artists are recognized for their creative abilities. It's of the biggest trade shows of the year and it is held in Vegas. There are 13 different categories in which a hairstylist/makeup artist can submit their work. Categories range from Avant Garde, Texture, Hair Color to Master Stylist; It covers everything. There is so much planning and detail that goes into these shots. Everyone pours their heart and soul into these images and you can most definitely tell.

This all took place in mid July. I'm a little late but still I think these artists' work need to be shared. For those of you who read this blog and don't do hair for a living, this is art in it's truest form. For those who are in the beauty industry, I hope you are inspired by some of the pictures below. It's been awhile...

I had to take a rather long break from blogging. A lot has happened since I blogged last. Some good some sad. I'll start with the sad first. In late July, I lost a dear friend and co-worker Cameron Amos. He was on his way to being an amazing stylist. He was taken too soon and will be forever remembered by myself, our co-workers, friends and family. He is a precious soul with a hearty laugh, who even though left this world too soon, has left a beautiful impression on my heart.

Secondly, I lost my Grandmother in early August. She was an amazing grandmother and while I am sad she is gone I know that she will be watching over me and our family. I will miss her dearly and the bright smile that would come across her face when I would visit. Rest in Peace Cameron and Mema. Love you both.

Now, for the hair side of things...Without jinxing the final product, we had a very successful photo shoot for SEVEN a couple of weekends ago. We should be expecting shots this coming week and I am super excited about seeing the images. The photographer for the day was Alvin Nguyen. So much talent in that guy! Our wardrobe stylist was Stacy Zimmerman. The gals looked amazing when it was all put together; wardrobe, hair and makeup. Rick Toth and Tanya Rodriguez were our resident makeup artists.

We had 5 models all together; Lottie, Shawn, Courtney, Ning and Jessica. We spent two days making sure everything came together accordingly. The theme throughout the shoot was a strong fringe and some geometry in the haircuts. Sunday was spent meeting the girls and getting their hair ready for the next day. Antonio, Lindsay and myself cut and colored the girls hair from 9am until 5pm. Monday morning started early at 7am and we began shooting at 10am. We finally wrapped up shooting by 3pm. I was exhausted to say the least, but in a good, I've accomplished something kind of tired.

2011 MTV's VMA

It was a music star studded evening last night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Everyone from Lady Gaga, in drag, to Katie Holmes was either performing or presenting. Below are a few of the evening's fashions...

Adele's hair here, matches the intensity and bigness of her voice.

I personally love the throw back style on her.

Beyonce showing off her baby bump!

Justin Bieber's new style, which I am not particularly fond of.

I actually prefer his signature cut compared to this one.

While I would never choose this color for myself, I think it is very well done.

Even the style is flawless. It works for Katy.

Nordstrom Fall Preview 2011

Fitting that today in Seattle the weather is most definitely fall. Seattle by far, is the coldest place in the country. Lucky us :) However, I am so excited because this afternoon we will arrive at Pier 91 to do some amazing hair for the annual Nordstrom Fall Preview Show in Seattle. Summer Beach Trends

Blake here! Hope all have been well! Now that I have quite a bit more free time & I am freshly relaxed from a short Eastern Washington vacay, I have a few beach trends to share! I wish I would have done a little more planning for my trip and picked up some of these things, but you live and learn! If you’re going out of town on some wonderfully extravagant trip or just to the beach for a day, these are some things you may want to pack.

Now, I have a serious love for Bridget Bardot’s summer style & I’m using her beauty for my beachy inspiration today.

Big Floppy Hats are not only stylish; they protect your delicate skin from the sun. Of course, pairing with sunscreen! Not to mention, this cute light colored bathing suit that accentuates your glowing tan!

Thick head bands! These are amazing if you’re somewhere windy, they look cute & effortless while keeping your hair out of your mouth & eyes. Plus, if you do a little bouffant with it, you can avoid that sun burn you get on your part (which is never fun!).

Braids are probably the most practical and easy beach hair. French braids are great if you’re doing a lot of activities, and slightly undone side braids if you just want to capture that beautiful summer look.

Fringe is Baaaaaack!

The quickest way to give your hairstyle a quick revamp is....Drumroll please....A fringe! Fringes come and go with the wind. You grow them out and the next year you cut them back, but always slightly different :). That's the beauty of fringes...hair today, gone tomorrow! Lucky for us they are back and pretty strong with a little whimsy. Here are some great examples of the latest and greatest.

This look can work on almost any hair length.

Creative Team Workshops

Lindsay, Antonio and I had the great pleasure of spending 3 days at the Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica, CA., this past March. We learned one of their current collections titled Tribe Autumn Winter 2011. It was a perfect mix of short, mid-length and long hair with geometry as a focal point for each cut. Something for everyone. The colors were vibrant and beautiful. The common theme with the color was color graduation. A pretty blending effect that was meant to be noticed.

We brought back inspiration and techniques from our time down in Santa Monica and held two creative workshops for our salon. Here are some snap shots from both of these classes. Many thanks to Candice Cusack for taking the time to be at both classes and take these fabulous pictures.

I have worked for SEVEN for a little over 7 and a half years. I think I was the 7th or 8th stylist hired. I've seen the salon grow from one 10 chair salon to two salons. One in Bellevue with 36+ stations, the other in Seattle with 49 stations and company wide 100+ stylists. Out of the many reasons I wanted to work for SEVEN, one stands out in particular...Potential. Even though it had only been open for 9 months when I started, I saw potential for growth and opportunity. What I got was tons of opportunity for growth in many ways I couldn't have even imagined when I started 7+ years ago. As any great business knows, in order to stay in the game and grow you have to reinvent yourself, even in the most minute ways.

With that said, I am happy to announce that we have launched our new website, new packaging and our new logo. The website is very simple in design and very user friendly. There is a well done bio for every stylist, not to mention a black and white picture of every single one of us. Here's one you may recognize...Click.

Happy Birthday Shelli Martin!

Today is Shelli Martin's Birthday!!!

There is so much I want say about this awe inspiring friend of mine...

First and fore most, Shelli is an incredibly devoted wife to her husband Paul and mother to their two kids Madeleine and Riley. If kids happen to be in my future, she WILL BE my role model and mentor. She and Paul have raised some of the best teenagers I have know :) Family is everything to her.

Second, Shelli is an amazing friend and confidant to everyone around her. She has this ability to always make you feel heard but also tell you the truth...whether you want to hear it or not. :) To Shelli, it's her duty to not only help others, but to EMPOWER those around her.

Shelli's laugh is contagious and priceless and she is one of the best story tellers I know. She is a beautiful person inside and out. Her favorite thing in life is to laugh with those closest to her! Not to mention giving and getting presents! She loves everything sparkly! :)

Luly Yang Photo Shoot

I apologize for not blogging at regular intervals...Life sometimes gets in the way of me being able to blog consistently. The past few weeks have been very busy and very fun :) My Mom was out here visiting me for 10 fabulous days. We made it to Portland by train, where unfortunately the weather was just as dreary and depressing as Seattle. She is now back at home in the south east where the weather is much lovelier and warmer. I won't hold my breath waiting for spring to arrive in the NW. Fingers crossed, it arrives soon!

This morning I had the very distinct pleasure of styling hair for Luly Yang's upcoming ad campaign. The shoot took place in Woodinville at the Alavekios Studio. One of the prettiest studio's I've worked in. Both Corinne and Stevn Alavekios are the mastermind photographers behind their studio and two people that Luly trusts to capture her vision and bring it to life. The great Michael Bride, fitting last name, was the makeup artist for the day. His two assistants did a magnificent job as well...Thank you Danielle Golla and Melanie Bulliman. Very elegant and beautiful makeup for our beautiful and regal model Ashley. Thank you to everyone on this shoot. Can't wait to see the ad campaign revealed.

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of styling hair for the Joe Zee appearance at Nordstrom. Joe Zee is no stranger to the fashion world. He is one of the most sought out stylists in the fashion realm today. He is currently the Creative Director of ELLE magazine and recently has taken on the the new reality show, ALL ON THE LINE, featured on the Sundance Channel. You can read his many accolades here.

Hi everyone! I am glad to announce another guest post by Blake. :)

Red Hair!!

The hippie girl that I am is very sad to see these twobeauties discard their famous Ombre look for a new, slightly more excitingcolor. Blake Lively and Drew Barrymore are a couple of celebs that helped makethe care free ‘California surfer girl’ hair so popular. Though, I have to admit that both of thesereds look fabulous (and I’m so glad they did their brows too!). Drew’s color ismore of a red brown, complementing her gorgeous eyes and is keeping in theslightly undone look that looks so great on her. Blake’s coppery tone looksamazing with her bronzed skin and aqua dress. And, of course, make sure you consult with a professional before you trythis look, as reds can be very tricky, in many ways ;)

Floral Bags

Keeping with the idea of creating your own summer aura,carrying a floral print bag will enhance your glow and keep you smiling. Thesetypes of bags are particularly great because they have a summer quality aboutthem, while remaining professional and cute. I absolutely adore the Marc byMarc Jacobs line, and the classiness of this bag, but there are so many styles,colors and looks to choose from. Not only are floral prints in, but brightyellows, blues and pinks, which I’m all for!

Chunky Heels

As I’m sure you’ve been seeing around town, chunky heels areback in! Though the stiletto is still a classic choice, wedges, clogs andsculpted heels are huge this spring. Many of them are being made with a multitudeof colors and shapes to add some life to those little feet that have beenhidden all winter. I absolutely adore these designs and only wish I had thecourage (and balance) to wear six inch platform wedges.

Lash Dip

Ok, I'm so excited to tell you about a little beauty secret that I have come across that seems relatively new to the lash world called LASHDIP. I have personally not had this done but for those who already have amazing lashes and those who don't want to put on mascara everyday but like the look without the runny, smudgy, clumpy look; we may have found you the perfect beauty secret. Right now, because this is new to the beauty scene, it isn't available everywhere. In the state of Washington, I can only find 2 spas that carry it. On Lashdip's website it gives you a directory of who are educated and trained in your state to apply Lashdip.

The one thing that I absolutely love about this product is that it can be applied to the lower lashes as well. With traditional eye lash extensions that is not a common practice. I just spoke with my lash extension gal and she thinks it can be a great pairing with lash extensions. It can help out the lower lashes better blend with the top extension lashes. I'm all for it!

I am so excited for 3 reason's today...

1. Today was sunny and beautiful..It makes my heart smile :)

2. It's Earth Day...even if there is only 2 hours left.

3. I have enlisted a very special person to write today's post. She is near and dear to my heart and she is on her way to being an amazing stylist. So without further ado, I introduce to you, Blake.

Spring Trends (Part I)

Happy Earth Day, everyone!

First of all, I would like to mention that this is Jaclyn’sassistant from SEVEN, (though I’m sure she could use one for her everyday life,seeing as she’s constantly on the move) Blake. I would like to take thisopportunity to express how amazing it’s been working with such an incrediblydriven woman. Her work ethic, and honestcare for her clients and career constantly remind me of why I am in this businessand remind me to push myself to a new level every day, as she does. Since I’m sure this is embarrassing my humblementor, I will move on to some fun spring trends that will brighten up our graySeattle days.

BRIGHT NEON NAIL COLOR IS BACK!

Being able to wear a nail color that makes my pale, vitaminD deprived skin look like its glowing makes me feel incredible. It alsobrightens up a colorless outfit just as well as any accessory & is aconstant, colorful reminder that summer is just around the corner. Of coursethere are other options than Dior’s electric tropics collection, but these areone of my favorites (due to their names reminding me of being under a palm treesomewhere.)

FLORAL FRAGRANCES

Anything with lily, jasmine, rose, violet, honeysuckle orgardenia. These beautiful scents will add life to any drab day. Marc Jacobs’new fragrance contains, not only some of these floral scents, but adds somegrapefruit and raspberry, for a little crisp edge. And really, anything in sucha cute bottle is bound to add a spring to your step ;)

And last for today,

THE LOW BUN

Last year, everyone was wearing a high, ballerina-esque bun,but this spring it’s more of a loose, flowing style. Center parts, slightlyundone pieces in the front, and lots of twists and turns in the back. And ofcourse, backcombing will add a little bit of drama, and a ‘night’ feel to thiscute trend. (Backcombing ‘HOW TO’, soon to come!)

I hope these tips inspire you to go out feeling beautifuland refreshed, glowing and letting off your own sunshine.

One of the many things that I love about my career are the wonderfully talented artists that I not only get to meet but that I also get to work with on a regular basis. Today I would like to recognize an icon of our industry and wish him a very happy birthday!!!

Happy Birthday Graham Breakwell!

"Graham began his career with Christopher Brooker, Artistic Director for Vidal Sassoon, doing runway shows and photo shoots for fashion magazines in London and Paris, such as VOGUE and ELLE. Some clients included Mary Quant, Paul McCartney, Paul Newman, Phil Collins, Angelica Huston, to name a few. Chosen by Vidal as first Artistic Principal for his Advanced Schools in London, Graham developed the curriculum to which the foundation is still being taught at these academies around the world. After leaving Sassoon to launch his own business, Graham started training stylists in Europe, Asia and America. Traveling worldwide, conducting seminars and teaching advanced cutting skills eventually brought him to Seattle where he formed the design team, Fashion Media. Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen were here in the Pacific Northwest promoting their line, Elizabeth and James, this past Thursday evening at Nordstrom. The hair and makeup for the models were super simple for this event. Very pinkish-nude lip and very loose wave parted down the middle for hair. I, of course, in my haste, forgot to bring the camera. (I will have to start wearing around my neck at all times.) Sorry there won't be any behind the scenes pics this time but you will have to go to the Elizabeth and James website to check out their clothes, shoes and accessories.

My Inspiration

I have to say, that one of my most favorite hair idols has to be Angelo Seminara. The man is amazingly talented. I mean, I don't even know if I have dreams as creative as his work. Seminara takes and pushes hair to a totally new and different level. If there is a bar I have set for myself I would have to say, this would be it!

His work, in two
words is... purely genius.

This is what Davines has to say about the recent hiring of Seminara as their Art Director.

"Angelo Seminara, a rising star of international hair-styling, has today become the new art director for Davines. While waiting to see him as the star of the On Hair Industry show at the next Cosmoprof, Angelo is presenting a preview of Náttúra, his first collection for Davines."

"Amongst the scores of acknowledgments Angelo has obtained over his already long career, the one that stands out is “British Hairdresser of the Year” 2010, a prize he had already won in 2007 and equivalent in terms of prestige to an Oscar for an actor."

I am extremely aware at how popular long wavy hair is. It's gorgeous and amazing and wonderfully feminine. I have worn this look for the last 3 years. It's one that doesn't seem to want to go away, with reasons that I am sure that I could fill a post with :). However, yesterday, I reached my breaking point! It had to go and right then. Thanks to one of my best friends and co-workers, Shelli Martin, I now am "ROCKING" the most adorable short hair! I haven't had hair this short since I was 22 and let's just say that was a while ago! ;)

I thought it would be fun to post some pictures of what my hair has looked like just since I started this blog last August...The results are pretty fun. It's interesting how I think that my own hair doesn't change very much...But, I guess I am wrong. It changes way more than I ever thought it did. That is one of the wonderful things about hair...Two actually. The first being that hair does grow. {Otherwise I would be out of business along with the rest of the hair world} Secondly, our hair is one of our accessories. Just like you don't usually wear the earrings, necklace, handbag, shoes, etc...everyday, you can change up your hair to reflect who you are at that moment.

Have fun looking at these pics and I hope that they might just be inspiring "enough", to create some sort of hair change for you! {Even if it is a small one!}

Eye Lash Extensions

One of my most favorite beauty pleasures is getting eye lash extensions. I've known about them for a while now. Many clients have come in with them...fluttering and batting their fabulous lashes...and I have finally gotten on the band wagon! My gal, Erica Evenson, has been applying extra luxurious lashes to my eyes now for about 2 months. I'm pretty sure that I won't be going back to my natural lashes for a long while. They are unbelievably addictive. {Especially when I barely had any to begin with.}. Just for the fact that I don't have to apply mascara, everyday, to my non-existent lashes, alone, are worth every penny and minute that I spend with Erica.

Below is a series of pictures the "filling" process. I wish I had done the pictures the very first time I went in, so you could see the drastic difference, but that didn't happen. However, it is still a very tedious process that my friend Candice Cusack shot for me. {Candice is a magnificent photographer and has worked on a few blog posts with me. Yes, if you must know, your bottom lashes have to be taped down. This does NOT hurt and is NOT uncomfortable at all. I literally sleep...

The lashes that are used are mink hairs.

{The minks are not harmed or killed. They are brushed and then the shed

hairs are used for this purpose.}

Once the right eye is done, then it is onto the left.

Same precautions are taken for the left eye.

You can see in this photo, just how small the lashes are, that are being applied.

This the end result...Thicker, darker and longer lashes. Bellissimo!

Today, Elizabeth Taylor died at the age of 79. Known in her lifetime for such works as "Cleopatra", "Who's afraid of Virginia Wolff?" which won her an Oscar... her perfumes in the 80's, (Passion, White Diamonds)... and let's not forget, her marriage record. Seven husbands but 8 marriages. Two of which were to Richard Burton, her "Cleopatra" co-star. Taylor's beauty and violet eyes enamored a world and today we lost her.

You will be missed Elizabeth.

Feather Extensions

There are a few a new kids on the block in extension land. The most popular being "Feather" extensions and the other being "Sparkle" or "Tinsel" hair. The craze for Feather extensions have definitely made it to Seattle. They are everywhere. They come in different colors and widths. You can shampoo and style them just like you would your own hair and they last a pretty long while...up to 3 months. Pretty fun as along as you don't go overboard. Remember the golden rule of, "Less is More"!

Even Jennifer Love Hewitt has been seen sporting this new look...

A great way to add a little drama to your do!

Old Vidal Sassoon Clippings

I thought I would share these clippings, one because I just saw "Vidal Sassoon the Movie", and two because they are pretty cool. I've now been in this industry for 16 years and have always been in awe of the Sassoon technique it self. To me this technique of cutting is about discipline, precision and artistry. There are many different ways and techniques to cutting hair, but this is THE one that revolutionized the hair industry. One man, Vidal Sassoon, with his vision and passion paved the way for all of the hairstylists today, whether they use the technique or not.

If you are at all interested in the beauty world, I hope that you watch this movie.

Nordstrom Spring Designer Preview Portland

Sorry I have been so neglectful! Traveling and working non-stop is sometimes counter productive to me having a chance to blog about all the awesome things we get to do!

Here are the runway pics from the Portland Spring Preview Show. This is one of my favorite runway designs...Simplistic and the colors were stunning. Each of the models looked like they were walking out of a little blue and white box. I loved it!

Built for Man Fashion Show

I had the pleasure of attending one of my friend and co-worker's fashion show this past Tuesday night. Francisco Hernandez is one of the most talented, passionate, artistic and unbelievably energetic force to be reckoned with I have ever been around. Not only is he an amazing hairstylist but a few years ago, he started his own fashion line for men called "Built for Man". I really don't think Francisco sleeps!

His latest collection was celebrated and shown off in the best of ways...The Ferrari dealership up on Capitol Hill in Seattle. Even though there was a major threat of snow, the show went on. I was so excited to be a spectator at this event and I took many pictures. Have a look below...

Behind the Scenes 8th Anniversary Party!

Ok...A little delayed; only because Seattle is supposed to be having "Snowapocolapse" for the past 2 days. Barely any snow here but on with the show! 8th Anniversary Party

Good Morning!!!! Such a beautiful day in Seattle this morning. Just a little teaser letting us know that spring is right around the corner. Hopefully this sunshine will last through the evening tonight where SEVEN has a great party planned in celebration of our 8th year in business. What an amazing 8 years it has been. When I first started with the company a little over 7 years ago, I was the 7th person hired in a 10 chair salon and in just this short time we have grown into 2 salons, over 100 stylists, and all together have just at 200 employees. Pretty amazing!

Each year we celebrate our successes as a company and this year is no exception. Tonight is about the unveiling of our new packaging for our product line, our new logo and our new website that all will be launched in late spring. It has been a lot of hard work and a lot of behind the scenes efforts, and being that I got have a sneak preview, I can tell you that all of it is AWESOME!

The Creative Team also gets to play a role in tonight's festivities and lets just say we are extremely excited to play such an integral part! Many pictures to come of pre-party action as well as during the celebration. Most likely this will event will be broken up into a few different posts!

10 Things to Eat for Healthy Hair

1. Salmon:
Here in the Pacific Northwest, salmon is plentiful and wonderful! Salmon is classified as an "oily fish", and is considered to be healthy due to the fish's high protein, high omega-3 fatty acids, and high vitamin D content. Because salmon is high in both protein and fatty acids, (good fats), this food is wonderful for the hair and body. Lots of shine when eaten on a regular basis. (3-5 times a week)

2. Dark Leafy Greens:
Kale and other dark green veggies such as spinach, chard, collard greens and broccoli are considered to be a highly nutritious vegetables with powerful antioxidant properties and are considered to be anti-inflammatory.
These veggies are very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, lutein and calcium. Wonderful to eat as often as possible for strong lustrous hair, skin and nails.

3. Avocados:
Avocados are high in health-promoting fats. About 75% of an avocado's calories come from fat, most of which is monounsaturated fat, (Good fat). Avocados also have 60% more potassium than bananas. They are rich in B vitamins, as well as vitamin E and vitamin K. In other words, good healthy fats are essential to our bodies and are needed for shiny, lustrous, beautiful hair skin and nails.

4. Carrots:
We all know that carrots are great for your vision but they are also good for your scalp. High in vitiamin A these guys will keep your scalp healthy which leads to healthy shiny hair.

5. Eggs:
How do you like your eggs??? Eggs add protein to our diet. They supply all essential amino acids for us, and provide several vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, essential B vitamins, choline, iron, calcium, phosphorus and potassium. They are also a single-food source of protein and help to strengthen hair and nails.

6. Beans:
What? Really? More beans and legumes... Yes!!! Lentils contain high levels of proteins, including essential amino acids and are an excellent source of protein. They also have ample amounts of iron, zinc and biotin. If you have a lack of biotin in your diet, this may lead to brittle hair and nails.

7. Nuts:
Many nuts are good sources of vitamins E and B₂ (riboflavin, an antioxidant), and are rich in protein, folate, fiber, and essential minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, selenium and zinc. Some nuts are also rich in good fats and help add shine and strength to hair and nails. A deficiency in zinc can lead to excessive hair shedding so make sure to eat a variety of nuts for a healthy snack.

8. Poultry:
Protein and more protein, need I say more. Strong body, strong hair!

9. Oysters:
Zinc is one powerful antioxidant and is found in oysters. If you love these guys, go ahead and sling them back.
If you have a hard time with even the thought of them, no worries! You can can up your zinc intake by eating these other foods that have plenty of this antioxidant and may be a little more palatable. Whole grains, nuts, beef and lamb.

10. Whole Grains:
Eat hearty whole grains, including whole-wheat bread and fortified whole-grain breakfast cereals, for a hair-healthy dose of zinc, iron, and B vitamins.

It all comes down to healthy eating and smart eating. Not only will your hair, skin and nails reap the benefits from the above foods but your body will feel better and will love you for it! Have a great Sunday!

Apple Cider Vinegar

The many uses of Apple Cider Vinegar are vast and really fabulous! This is an amazing all purpose potion. I'm only going to touch on the benefits of using it for your hair and scalp, but Google ACV and you will find PLENTY of uses not to mention major health and cleaning benefits.

Itchy and Dry Scalp

The great thing about ACV is that it has natural occurring acids and enzymes that kill the "bottle bacillus", a bacteria that is one of the causes for many scalp conditions such as dandruff, itchy scalp and sometimes hair loss. The bacteria works it's way into the hair follicle allowing dry crusts, (white flakes), to form that itch and flake and this can be embarrassing for those that suffer from dry itchy scalp.

A simple at home treatment for dandruff and itchy scalp is to apply full strength ACV to the scalp, massage in, and leave on for a half hour to an hour before shampooing your hair. Make sure to rinse your hair in cool/tepid water after shampooing and conditioning. This will ensure that your cuticle will seal itself shut promoting lots of natural shine.

For an extra strength solution, apple cider vinegar can be infused with oils such as tea tree oil which is another excellent natural anti-dandruff ingredient. Or you can add lavender which is has a calming effect on the senses.

Vinegar Hair Rinse
Hair and skin are on the mildly acidic side of the pH scale, 4.5 to 5.5. Apple Cider Vinegar rinse has a pH of 2.9. On the other hand, many of the hair care products we use, such as cheap shampoos, bleach, hair color, and straighteners are way on the opposite end of the pH scale and are too alkaline for hair and skin. Over use of these products result in dullness and lack of bounce in the hair. Not to mention, these products can cause your color to fade too quickly. That is just money down the drain, LITERALLY!

Rinsing with apple cider vinegar will help reestablish the natural pH of your hair and remove the buildup that occurs over time from different product usage.

Rinsing will also close and seal the cuticle which covers and protects the surface of each hair strand. This creates a smoother surface which can be your 1st defense against frizz and add shine.

Don't worry about the slight vinegar smell you might notice after rinsing. It will disappear completely as your hair dries. And you shouldn't smell like a tossed salad :)

Make your own after-shampoo hair rinse by mixing 1/3 of a cup of ACV into a quart of water. You can store this mixture in a plastic spray bottle for better control and keep it in the shower so it's ready to go. If you would like to make a smaller batch of this vinegar/water solution, try mixing 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar into 1 cup of tepid filtered tap water.

This ACV spray solution can be used once or twice a week...Or often as needed! Let me know how it works for you and good luck on the battle against the flakes!

Sleepy head!

Can you tell it's just a lazy Sunday morning here? My furry little boy sleeps better than I do...there could be something wrong here. I'm sure that it has nothing to do with how spoiled rotten he is, but we wouldn't have any other way :)

Spring/ Summer Photo Shoot 2011

And.... I'm back!!!! Kicking off this New Year with a blast!!! Now that I have replaced the dead computer with one that is working, I am back to blogging!!!! YAY!!!! Thank you to all of you who have been checking in!!!

This past Sunday, SEVEN shot their Spring/ Summer shoot for 2011. Never mind that it was snowing and very overcast :) What else should you expect from Seattle in January? We shot at Hotel 1000 and they were unbelievably accommodating in every way imaginable. A big thank you to Hotel 1000! Resolutions...

It's almost the New Year, 2011! So what resolutions do you have for yourself this coming year? Are you just fulfilling one hope or dream on your list, or are you courageous and tackling all of them. One of my best friends, Rebecca, put it well. In her own words ..."In 2011 I am going to do the things that I am most scared of. The things that I have thought about for years, but never accomplished due to self doubt. Taking risks and re-investing in myself (my brain)." I admire Rebecca's courage and strength and have no doubt that she will accomplish what she sets out to do.

For myself, however, my resolutions tend to be smaller but just as important. But these little resolutions are sure to make a big impact in my life.

Take nothing for granted. (health included)
Spending more time outside (especially with my k-9 baby boy, Paisan)
Traveling more (even if it is to just get out of the city)
Spending more time with the people that mean the most to me.
Taking more time for myself and taking better care of me.
(This is the most important)...LEARNING TO SAY "NO"! (at least to some things :)

This last one I have struggled with my whole life and will probably continue to struggle with. I am a self professed "People Pleaser". It's one of the many reasons I love being a hairstylist...Instant gratification all day long, for both parties. While making people happy makes me happy...I also have to remember to take time for myself, because that makes me happy too! :) The idea is BALANCE!!!

I believe that 2011 is MY year, and I want to be present for all the moments it has to offer. This coming year, I wish all of you an abundance of Love, Peace, Happiness and Balance!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

I have had the most amazing time with family and friends! I have even gotten to experience a "White Christmas"! It absolutely beautiful outside and it just keeps on coming! Might get stuck at the Aunt's house for a few days but we have plenty of food and presents to keep our bellies full and happy!

Have you been Naughty or Nice?

Well, I have been naughty! Sorry I haven't been posting very much lately. It has been very busy at work and there just doesn't seem to be enough hours in a day! Not to mention I will be with the family right before Christmas through the New Year! I will try to get some more posts in before I leave, but just like for everyone else, the Holiday Seasons are busy busy busy!!! I hope everyone is enjoying the season and I hope you all have been good so that Santa brings you what you've asked for! :) Take care and I promise to post a lot more frequently in the New Year!!!

The Pineapple Express

A Little Weather Lesson

Here in the Pacific Northwest, we are experiencing the "Pineapple Express". For those who are not familiar with this weather phenomenon, it's quite simple and somewhat interesting. Click here for a satellite image of the P. Express that has been happening more recently in the past few years.

Basically what this means for the good people of the NW, is we get tons of rain and lots of frizzy hair as a by-product of all the wetness in the air.

What does one do to help relieve all this unwelcome frizz???...

You either go with the flow, literally...or you pull out a arsenal of product and cross your fingers.

My personal way of dealing is using the flat iron subtly to give the hair a slight wavy look, (seen as how it will end up that way), or add some anti- frizz serum to enhance an already wavy or curly look.

Another great way to deal with the frizz is to put your hair up or at the very least, clip out of your way. I found these great clips on Etsy by Baubles-n-Bows.

Either way, just like the weather, sometimes you can't predict the hair. Chances are, you are better to go with the flow, instead of against. Don't forget your umbrella or your paddle!!!
